Andre Appel has been working as a certified specialist for employment law at the Berlin office of Ogletree Deakins LLP since January 2020 and was promoted to Partner, effective January 1, 2024.
National and international companies – as well as the public sector – rely on benefit from his comprehensive advice on all aspects of individual and collective labor and employment law.
Andre assists clients with challenges covering the entire spectrum of employment law. He has particular expertise in collective bargaining agreements, for example in questions concerning the interpretation and application of regulations from collective bargaining agreements in the public sector (German: TV-L, TVöD) or collective agreements for entire industry sectors in the private sector. He has successfully pursued numerous extrajudicial and judicial litigations especially for public sector employers on questions regarding job classification issues within pay structures – some of these cases have even reached the Federal Labor Court. Andre Appel is especially experienced in dealing with groups of persons who enjoy special legal protection (works and staff councils, trainees, and severely disabled persons).
As a TÜV-certified data protection officer he counsels clients on all issues relating to the implementation of and compliance with data protection regulations in accordance with the European General Data Protection Regulation, as well as the new data protection regulations relevant to employers. In this context, he has also been involved in numerous proceedings with different data protection supervisory authorities in the past.
In addition, Andre Appel guides clients through the evolving landscape of AI-driven employment tools helping them manage legal risks, mitigate bias, use of AI in hiring, performance evaluation, and workforce management. His goal is to help companies prepare their workforces for the future.
Before joining Ogletree Deakins, Andre Appel worked at a medium-sized, interregional commercial law firm for several years, where he was particularly active in the areas of employment law and industrial property rights.
As a “Diversity Ambassador” he actively promotes a discrimination-free working environment and has been part of ALICE’s “Show Your Face” list since 2021.
